“Behold, this is my doctrine—whosoever repenteth and cometh unto me, the same is my church.” – Jesus Christ (Avahr 17:39)
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” – Jesus Christ (Matthew 18: 20)
There are many that feel their denomination is the “one true church.” This leads individuals to ask, what makes one a “true Christian?” Is it the church they attend? Is it the books they read? Is it the things they do or do not do?
While these things may be attributed to their Christianity, it is the God we follow that make us Christians. If that God is Jesus Christ, then you are a fellow Christian. Those that follow him, true Christians, all have one thing in common, regardless of how we express it: the pierced heart. While there is but one true church, the Church of Christ, in the spiritual world, there are many forms of it here upon the earth. This is because each of us have differing needs, and God’s vineyard is large enough to accommodate.
Accepting Grace
The Bible tells us that all that accept Christ’s Grace are his and are saved through his name (Romans 3: 22-26). This salvation humbles us. Alma counseled his son, Shiblon, warning him of bragging about the correctness of the Church of Christ.
“See that ye are not lifted up unto pride… Use boldness, but not overbearance… that ye may be filled with love… Do not say: ‘O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren;’ but rather say: O Lord, ‘forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy’—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times.” – Alma 18:14-15 RAV, 38: 11-12, 14 OPV
We do not know who has had their heart pierced and who has not. We are all on differing levels of Christ’s Grace. This is why we are commanded not to judge others, but to judge ourselves (Matthew 7:1-5). Rather than rejecting our fellow Christians, we should be one with them, as we are all one Church and One Kingdom in Christ. Each of us has a place in God’s kingdom perfect for them to help them on their path back home.
The Fellowship
